One would never send an employee on an expatriate assignment who possesses inadequate professional competence to complete the assignment half-a-world away from home. Yet, many employees with professional competence are sent who are at risk, or the employee and accompanying spouse are at risk as expatriates, in being willing, or able, to adjust well to a host culture.
Two negative outcomes can result:
The expatriate employee may well significantly under perform his or her potential while enduring an unhappy assignment.
The assignment will be aborted at major personal emotional or psychological harm and hefty unbudgeted costs for having sent a candidate, or candidate family, at risk for cultural adjustment.
